Internships

All current students and recent graduates can apply for relevant paid work experience through the Faculty of Science and Technology Internship Programme.

Work around your studies

The programme provides full-time, 2-3 month paid summer internship opportunities for science and technology students from July to September, advertised and recruited April - May. Part-time internships are available all year round at varying lengths to fit around your studies.

Students can receive up to £1,000 per month for full-time work. Part-time work is paid pro-rata.

Location and travel

Internships usually take place with a host organisation and you'll work from their premises for the entirety of the internship. The majority of businesses will be located in the North West of England, but opportunities outside this area are sometimes available.

Gain experience and skills

Relevant work experience while you are at university is crucial to achieving a good graduate job. An internship will help you develop transferable skills such as:

  • Team working
  • Time management
  • Leadership
  • Networking
  • Commercial awareness

Benefits

  • Choose from a wide spectrum of science and technology roles
  • Test potential career options
  • Gain further employment - many employers use internships to test a new role and frequently offer graduate roles to interns

Student Feedback

"The internship was a great way for me to practice and refine my project management skills, and learn about how businesses operate in an industry different to my previous experiences."

Jenny Lam, MSci IT for Creative Industries with Industrial Experience, who completed her internship for Xyone.

Industrial Experience MSci Hons Degrees

Our MSci Hons degree programmes offer a 10-week internship with a graduate employer, providing you with invaluable first-hand experience of working in a collaborative, professional, industrial group environment. Our internships are sourced by our unique Knowledge Business Centre(KBC) and provide relevant, targeted work experience at a range of partner companies, from SMEs to corporate businesses. We will assign a personal academic supervisor who will guide and assist you during your placement, and you will have the opportunity to undertake a 7 week dissertation project in the summer with the same company.

There have been many cases where students who have undertaken these placements have secured further employment with their host company after completing the placement, and the experience will help you to develop employability skills such as organisation, timekeeping and project management. Our students return from their placements with increased motivation, and a greater understanding of the industry and their own career interests.
