Expression of Interest – 4th Call for EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account Co-Funded Projects

We are asking for expressions of interest for projects to be co-funded under the EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account (IAA) extension, a further £300,000. The bulk of the funding will be used to support projects to be co-funded by one or more external partners.

Who can apply?

Any researcher who has held or who has been supported by EPSRC funding (as postdoctoral researcher or PhD student) and whose research activities fall within the EPSRC’s domain areas will be eligible to apply for funding. The partner organisation will be expected to contribute 50% of the costs of the project.

What funds are available?

At present we expect to fund projects of a total cost of up to £50,000. As per the conditions of the grant, university overheads willnot be applied to any budget. Therefore the effective intervention rate is over 75%.

Funding duration and project length

The fund must be spent in the 18 months from October 2015 to the end of March 2017 and we want to ensure that partnerships have as much time as possible to develop and agree project proposals and still be in a position to commit funding from the beginning of October 2015.

We anticipate an average project length of around 12 months preceded by a period in the recruitment of the resource to work on the project, such as a dedicated Post-Doctoral Research Assistant.

Express interest now

The development of the Expression of Interest (EoL) can be supported by advice and guidance on what is needed. The feedback on the EoL is intended to promote the preparation of successful bids and avoid abortive costs for partnerships in preparing bids which are unlikely to succeed in funding allocation.

There will also be a Bid Preparation Workshop to facilitate the completion of full proposals.

It is not essential to complete an EoL to submit a full bid, but you are strongly urged to do so particularly where a partnership is relatively new (for example has participated in only one seed funded project) as the preparation of the EoL is intended promote early discussion in partnerships to secure the partnership commitment to co-funding prior to the preparation of a full bid.

Early call to gauge interests and develop proposals for 12 month projects

This call for expressions of interest is designed to gauge the level of opportunity and anticipated scale of the projects and hence the number we will be able to fund. This will be followed by a formal call expected at the beginning of September.

The other reason for making this early call for expressions of interest is to enable partnerships to develop project proposals in advance of the formal call, and also to consider and agree the business case for the partner contribution.

Where necessary we will endeavour to provide support following receipt of the expressions of interest in the development and evaluation of proposals for projects which have a very good chance not only of funding but also delivering successful projects.
