STFC IAA

In late 2014, Lancaster University was awarded £50,000 from the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) for an Impact Acceleration Account (IAA). The university was allowed to submit a business plan for this funding on the basis of the value of its STFC portfolio.

Aim: Flexible funding for STFC research

The STFC IAA has been developed to provide flexible funding to support researchers to take their STFC-funded ideas towards commercialisation through activities not currently supported by an STFC funding programme.

Impact Workshop

In April 2015, an Impact Workshop was held at the Cockcroft Institute at Daresbury where a number of STFC supported researchers could explore potential project ideas for impact and engage with a number of external partners to discuss these ideas. These external partners included Oxford Instruments, 2D Heat and DSoFt Solutions. Business development staff from both the STFC and Sci-Tech Daresbury were also present.

8 new projects

As a result of this workshop, a number of seed funding awards were made, designed to get STFC funded researchers engaging with external partners and acceleration the potential impact of their activities.

STFC IAA Seed Funding Recipients May 2015

Dr Graeme Burt (Engineering) awarded £5,000
Graeme will work with E2V to develop low cost Radiotherapy Linacs for hospitals in developing countries.

Dr Chris Lingwood (Engineering) awarded £5,000
Chris will work with Tech-X to develop more accurate electromagnetic simulation products.

Dr David Burton (Physics) awarded £3,800
David will develop ad-ons to the Minecraft software package for particle accelerator science simulations that can be used for related education and outreach activities.

Dr Harald Fox (Physics) awarded £8,500
Harald will explore applications of large scale muon detection, such as shipping containers and volcanoes with Oxford Instruments.

Harald will work with DSofT Solutions in developing a computer simulation for high energy physics.

Professor Farideh Honary (Physics) awarded £8,000
Farideh will work with the Met Office to develop a low cost magnetometer for monitoring space weather.

Jaroslaw will work with Oxford Instruments on the testing of cryogenic devices.

Professor Jim Wild (Physics) awarded £7,000
Jim will work with EDF and the National Grid to explore how space weather disrupts power grids.
