Research & development of gas & liquids powered materials processing phenomena

TCL-Cumbria has developed a novel environmentally friendly device utilising fluid dynamics technology which is designed for use with liquids, gases and flow-able materials.

A vortical flow induced by suitably interacting secondary fluid jets in a pipe-connecting chamber can sustain a primary fluid or flow-able media flow through pipes between tanks at different hydraulic heads requiring no moving mechanical parts. Moving from recent theoretical analyses and prototype testing, this project will optimise the design of this multi-purpose pumping device by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and test experimentally the final design. 

Applicants will have a first Degree in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering or related area, some basic experience of grid generation and usage of commercial CFD packages, and good spoken and written English skills.

Industry Partner

This doctoral research project will be supervised by Lancaster University and TCL-CUMBRIA; Industrial Designers and Innovators of the application of fluid power - compressed air, pneumatics, hydraulics - combined with mechanical engineering, mechatronics and automation technology. Skills have been applied in a wide spectrum of environments from agriculture to motor vehicles, energy to pharmaceutical and special effects for film studios.
