Year in Industry with EDF
The Lancaster University and EDF Energy Placement programme is a collaboration between the University and Heysham 2 nuclear power station.
The aim of the programme is to provide students with a unique opportunity that builds on the relationship between our two organisations and in so doing, circumvents the need for individuals to enter national recruitment processes. The programme will appeal to students who have a desire to work in the energy sector on exciting and rewarding projects.
We have six discipline areas:
- Continuous Improvement
- Environmental Safety
- Nuclear Fuel Route Engineering
- Safety and Organisational Culture
What are the timings and key dates?
The industrial placements will begin no earlier than the end of September 2017 and last for up to twelve months. Deadline for submission of applications is midnight, 5th February 2017. First stage interviews will take place on 13th, 14th and 15th February 2017 at Lancaster University, with two members of staff from the Faculty of Science and Technology. A shortlist will be provided to Heysham 2 of those applicants that are being recommended for assessment by EDF Energy. Representatives from Heysham 2 will be in touch to arrange interviews with those people they would like to meet.
Who is eligible to apply?
Any student or former student of Lancaster University is eligible to apply. For current students, this can be taken as a year-out, through what is known as intercalation. Intercalation allows a temporary suspension of student status for a number of reasons. If your academic department offers a sandwich course, this may fulfil that element. For those who are about to or have already graduated, this could provide a step into working in the energy sector.
What will I be paid?
Salary is in the range of £15K.

Further Information and Networking Event
We are hosting an informal event for students to find out more information, with the opportunity to learn more about the company and the roles, including a talk from a successful member of the 2016/17 Lancaster University and EDF Energy Placement Scheme. This will be a unique opportunity to understand how to make a strong application as well as what EDF are looking for in their future workforce.
It will take place on the evening of Monday 30th January 2017 at 6pm in the Management School. We are also offering Q&A time to the audience with free soup and informal networking. For this reason, only students who have registered on Target Connect before the event will be eligible to attend (by Thursday 26th January at noon). Due to high interest at previous events, early booking is strongly advised.
