The development of a passive water sampler for high-polarity cytotoxic drugs in aquatic systems
An exciting analytical chemistry project aimed at developing a novel polymer-based passive water sampler for cytotoxic anti-cancer drugs is available in a partnership between Lancaster Environment Centre and the Centre of Ecology & Hydrology. The occurrence of these potent pharmaceuticals in wastewater effluents and receiving waters is of growing concern, particularly in the water industry, as many of these chemicals are not fully degraded during the sewage treatment process resulting in their occurrence in river/estuary water, with risks to water quality and aquatic biota.
The project will develop a sensitive and reproducible analytical method based on LC-MS instrumentation. A laboratory programme will be pursued to understand the behaviour of a selection of these chemicals in water under a range of test conditions (varying pH and dissolved constituents). Experiments will be undertaken to measure chemical uptake and depuration for a range of test sorbents to develop a suitable passive-sampler matrix ready for field trials. Development and field testing of the sampler will be conducted in conjunction with scientists from United Utilities, the major water supply company in NW England and a CASE partner on this project, with the aim of producing field data on a high spatial scale. The project will be jointly supervised by scientists from LEC and CEH.
