Entrepreneurial graduates awarded prizes from resident LEC companies

Two top graduates received awards for their outstanding work for businesses in a ceremony attended by representatives from LEC and supporting businesses.

Hanna Wright, BSc Hons Physical Geography (Australasia), received the Lancaster Environment Centre Undergraduate Prize 2012 from David Natusch, Strategic Energy Consulting, who sponsored the award. Strategic Energy Consulting is a LEC resident company which works with private and public sector clients to help prepare them for the financial, reputational and practical challenges of existing and emerging environmental regulations and issues of energy security.

Hannah explains "I am absolutely delighted to have been awarded the LEC prize for best performance by an undergraduate student. I have thoroughly enjoyed my Physical Geography (Australasia) degree and the opportunities that being part of a diverse and interdisciplinary department has provided. I have received much support and encouragement from tutors and staff within LEC, and also during an enriching year at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, for which I am extremely grateful.

"I am very thankful to Strategic Energy Consulting, which has generously sponsored this LEC prize. It is a reflection of my enthusiasm, commitment and drive to learn across a breadth of disciplines throughout my degree, and the past four years have been extremely rewarding. I am delighted that I will be continuing to study within LEC next year, for a taught masters in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security. I very much look forward to further learning within this critical and exciting field, and the challenges and opportunities ahead."

Kate Berry, BSc Hons Environmental Science, received the Lancaster Environment Centre Innovation Undergraduate Prize 2012, sponsored by The Reach Centre. The REACH Centre acts as a central hub for REACH services and provision. It currently runs workshops and seminars, offers direct consultancy and can support industry in the delivery of all REACH related activities. These services enable companies to achieve compliance and help support long-term sustainable and successful business models.

Kate was awarded the prize for the best project with a business. "I am really pleased to have been awarded the prize and I would like to express my thanks to Peak Associates for providing the placement and LEC for enabling it to happen." More on the project and its impact in the next issue.
