LEC deepens its relationships with prestigious Chinese partners
Vice Chancellor, Prof. Paul Wellings, together with LEC staff Prof Bill Davies, Dr Merce Aloy, Dr Hong Li and Prof Kevin Jones, visited the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and China Agriculture University (CAU) in Beijing in late September 2010, to further strengthen collaborations with China.

A formal Memorandum of Understanding was signed with CAS in January 2010, since then collaborations over Masters and PhD programs, summer schools and conferences have been developed.
The new 2 year International Masters in Environmental Science and Technology is available for 2011 entry.

This follows a meeting between Professor Yong-xiang Lu, the deputy chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and the president of Chinese Academy of Sciences and LEC Research Director, Prof. Kevin Jones earlier in September.
Informal discussions about future collaborations between CAS institutes and LEC were held with Prof Yong-long Lu (Director of CAS International), Ms Dongyao Wang, Dr Hong Li and Prof Jones.
Professor Jones holds a Senior Visiting Professorship at CAS and is leading discussions on a range of collaborative opportunities in research and post-graduate training.
A new 2 + 2 degree is being developed with CAU, together with a 2 year International Masters in Sustainable Agriculture, and a range of joint training and research collaborations are already in place.

On 24th October, forty teachers from across the South Lakes area visited the Faculty of Science and Technology, as part of a partnership between Lancaster University, Research Council UK, and the South Lakes Federation.

Peter Hodgson, who has just successfully defended his PhD, has now rounded off the achievement with the award of an EPSRC Doctoral Prize by the Faculty of Science and Technology.
