Funded 4-Year R&D Opportunities for Companies

Does your company have an unresolved biological issue, or need to develop new biological products and services?

Are you constrained by limited resources or the costs of traditional R&D?

Are you able to work with us to outline a challenging project before August?

The Lancaster Environment Centre can enable you to access funded BBSRC PhD studentships to address your issues.

Current priority areas for funding that fit LEC are:

  • How farming can respond to environmental change.
  • Ensuring our food security.

However, BBSRC funds research covering plants, microbes, animals and tools/ technology underpinning biological research. Therefore project ideas can be much more diverse, or if outside of these areas may fit other opportunities.

The 2011 deadline will be 28 July.

To participate, you will need to provide £15,600 over for 4 years, in return for over £80,000 from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council. Good projects should be focused, achievable, provide a range of training opportunities for the student and have potential to really benefit your company. Academic rigour to challenge the student and allow them to develop solutions to real problems is also important, as a 6-18 month placement with you. Projects receive thorough academic supervision, are supported by a £35 million 300+ researcher facility and are jointly managed with you.

Besides developing new products or services and gaining a graduate dedicated to your project over 4 years, benefits to you include access to:

  • Our expertise and ideas
  • New graduates
  • Intelligence on competitors through literature searches
  • Our extensive facilities
  • Scientific publications
