PhD Studentships for Entry in October 2010

A number of UK Research Council research studentships are available across a range of disciplines from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).

The HighWire Doctoral Training Centre also offers EPSRC PhD multi-disciplinary studentships in digital innovation. Note that with rare exceptions, research council studentships are available only to applicants from, or qualifying as residents of, the UK.

In addition, eight Faculty of Science and Technology studentships are available for full-time PhD study in any FST department.

To apply for any of these studentships you should follow the normal application procedure, noting in your application which of these funding opportunities you wish to be considered for. Visit the research and postgraduate pages of the relevant department or HighWire for information on the research areas in which we welcome applications.

New British Government Requirements for Overseas Postgraduate Students

The British government has introduced new requirements for certain non-EU/EEA (including Switzerland) national postgraduate students.

Applicants for Doctoral and Masters by research programmes and certain taught Masters programmes in Science and Technology are now required to apply for an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate, prior to applying for a visa. Existing students who are applying for a visa extension also need to apply for an ATAS certificate.

Full details, including a list of subject areas affected, are available from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office ATAS page.
