Mechanical Engineering is a field covering any industry that uses moving parts, from construction to transport; medicine to manufacturing; renewable energy to consumer technology. Our four-year MEng degree programme gives you the skills necessary for the subject, with an applied focus on mechanical system designs. In your first year, you’ll study core Engineering and Engineering Mathematics subjects.
In your second year, your studies will continue and include more project work and during your final year you can specialise more – building teamwork skills while developing and indulging your passion for engineering.
Projects such as these help you gain solid experience and your combination of practical and analytical skills means you will have the option of entering an exciting variety of careers.
Where could it take you?
Many of our graduates go on to work with the companies we have strong links with, often starting on salaries in excess of £26,500 per annum. Recent Engineering graduates have embarked upon careers as electronic, mechanical, applications, design and nuclear systems engineers.
As well as specific technical knowledge, your Engineering degree teaches you skills of logical analysis, communication, problem-solving and project management. They are used by our graduates for work in design, project engineering and management, research, contracts, sales and marketing and data analysis. Our graduates also choose to continue their studies to MSc and PhD level.

Typical entry requirements
For courses starting in 2015:
A-level: AAAto include Mathematics andPhysical Science A-level. We normally expect three A-levels.
General Studies: Accepted as one of the best 3 grades if 4 A-levels are presented
Key skills: Not included in offer
Scottish Highers: AAABB. Advanced Higher in Mathematics is helpful.

International Bacc: 36 ptsoverall with 16 pts from best three HL courses, inc. Mathematics at higher level
BTEC: Overall grades of DDD in an Engineering related subject including Distinctions in the Mathematics and FurtherMathematics units
GCSE: Grade B in Mathematics and Grade C in English Language

Direct entry to second year: Appropriate qualifications include a good Higher National Diploma or Certificate in relevant subjects, or a Higher Diploma from polytechnics in Hong Kong and Singapore. Candidates with other qualifications of comparable standing should write to enquire.

It will be necessary for students to purchase clothing for use in laboratories which is approximately £70. The University pays for student membership of the Institute of Engineering and Technology where appropriate plus contributes to specialist software and workshop materials.
Students also need to consider further costs which may include books, stationery, printing, photocopying, binding and general subsistence on trips and visits. Following graduation it may be necessary to take out subscriptions to professional bodies and to buy business attire for job interviews.
