Dr Gillian Lancaster

Gillian Lancaster took up the post of Director of the Postgraduate Statistics Centre in May 2007. She was previously Deputy Director and Senior Lecturer in Medical Statistics at the Centre for Medical Statistics and Health Evaluation, Liverpool University (2002-2007). She started her career as a Medical Statistician at Christie Hospital in Manchester from 1986 to 1993 after completing an MSc in Medical Statistics at Leicester University. In 1993 she returned to fulltime education to study for a PhD in Applied Statistics at Lancaster University, moving to Liverpool University in 1998 as a Lecturer in Medical Statistics. She has engaged in many interdisciplinary collaborations over the years and is particularly interested in promoting research into statistical education and statistical literacy.

Gillian has been a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society since May 1987 and was made a chartered statistician (CSTAT) by the Society in March 1993. She is also secretary of the Royal Statistical Society Primary Health Care Study Group. She has been a member of the International Society for Clinical Biostatistics since 1995. She currently sits on the Primary Care Research Network North West, Advisory Board and has previously sat on the North West Institute for Bio-Health Informatics (NIBHI), Liverpool Steering Group (2005-7), Merseycare NHS Trust R&D Strategy Group (2005-7), Aintree Hospitals NHS Trust. Research Review Committee (2005-7), the Liverpool Health Authority Paediatric Research Ethics Committee (2001-2004) and Royal Liverpool Childrens Hospital, Research Review Committee (19982003).
