FHM Research Ethics Committee
(FHMREC)

The FHM Research Ethics Committee oversees ethical review of proposed research that is not reviewed through research ethics mechanisms outside the university (such as the NHS Research Ethics Service). It is a newly formed committee that began operating in March 2011. A research project being conducted by FHM staff and/or post-graduate students should be submitted to the FHMREC for ethical review if it involves human participants or other possible ethical risk factors, and is not being reviewed externally. Applications should not be submitted directly to UREC. A link to the application flow chart outlining the steps of ethical review is available on the right of this page.

The aim of the committee is to ensure that ethical considerations and issues are addressed in the conduct of research . The committee seeks to support and encourage the process of ethically conducted research in FHM. The committee structure includes members from all of the FHM divisions providing diversity in perspectives and speciality knowledge. A link to the committee membership list is available on the right.

The Review Process

The FHMREC works in close collaboration with the University Research Ethics Committee (UREC) that needs to provide final approval. However, the process is designed so that applications will undergo full review by only one committee in most cases. All applications should be submitted to the FHMREC, which will determine the appropriate committee.
