New Deal for Communities

About New Deal for Communities

The government funded New Deal for Communities (NDC) programme was launched in 1998 and aimed to improve the physical environment (including housing), education and health as well as reduce crime and unemployment in 39 disadvantaged neighbourhoods. Each neighbourhood was funded for 10 years and received on average £50 million from government.

Our research builds on an earlier government funded national evaluation led by Sheffield Hallam University between 2001 and 2010 examining the impact of the national NDC initiative on the key social determinants of health and the health impact of specific projects. While that evaluation undertook some analysis of health impact, it was not funded nor designed to look explicitly at the impact of the NDC initiative on health inequalities.
