Joyce Hsiu-yen Yeh

PhD in Sociology 2004

As an international student from Taiwan, my student life in Lancaster was one of the most rewarding and inspiring experiences I have ever had. I have been fortunate to study and work with scholars who understood and supported my efforts, intellectually and emotionally. Particular recognition goes to my teachers and friends of the sociology department whose support, insights, enthusiasm and great sense of humor formed an ideal, friendly, multi-cultural community and an interdisciplinary cosmopolitan learning environment in which we were equipped with critical thinking skills and a broad research toolkit. Even now the Lancaster Sociology legacy is something I am hoping to pass on to my students in Taiwan.

The lively bar in each college, weekly movies and all kinds of campus sports, concerts and social activities made college life exciting, enriching and a great deal of fun. The graduates whom I know from sociology work in a wide range of careers. For those like me who returned to Taiwan, each of us has enjoyed great success in our universities. I’m proud to be an alumnus of Lancaster University and also highly recommend it to others.
