Applying for a PhD

Once you have decided to apply to study for a PhD at Lancaster, please start your online application as soon as possible. The process is explained on the university Postgraduate Admissions pages.

The supporting documentation screen will provide you with a list of required documents. These will usually include:

  • a fully-developed research proposal (advice on how to draft this can be found by searching online)
  • an example of postgraduate level written work (eg MA Coursework, article or research paper)
  • transcripts of previous higher education (college/university) degrees or other courses that you have completed/for which you are currently studying. Note that for transcripts in languages other than English, a certified English translation will be required
  • references
  • for those for whom English is not their first language, copies of English language test results.

Once you have completed your application, we will identify potential supervisors and may invite you for an informal interview.
