Undergraduate - Why Lancaster?

There are many great reasons to join us here at Lancaster:

Highly Ranked

Our degrees are highly ranked, and are taught by some of the best research-active tutors in the UK. A 2014 Teaching Quality Assessment gave us the highest possible ranking - 'full confidence in the quality of our teaching'. We take our reputation for excellent teaching seriously and are dedicated to making your experience at Lancaster inspiring, enriching and well-supported.

Hands on

In our courses, you don't just learn about what others have done - you get involved. Students conduct their own independent research projects, undertake work placements and volunteering, and complete a range of assessments that may include blogs, videos, presentations, and interviews. Flexibility

The unique structure of our degree courses allows you to personalise your own learning. Whether you have diverse interests or aren't quite sure what you want to major in, our degree structure allows you to make the most of your time at Lancaster. Social Work students are able to complement their professional training with an optional course of their choice in the first year.

Complementary pathways

We offer four complementary courses that you can choose from in your first year, all informed by our staff's research on major social issues. Visit our blogs to find out more

Supporting your development

In addition to contact with course tutors, we have a Departmental Personal Tutor who provides support on personal matters, and every student has an academic tutor who meets with them each term to check up on academic progress, answer any questions, and share ideas about study skills or career plans. We also have dedicated staff who provide extra assistance with things like academic writing and careers support.

Building skills for your career

We encourage students to build career-relevant skills and experiences during our degrees. In addition to the skills gained through our courses and assessments, students can take up optional internship and job experiences and participate in the Lancaster Award scheme that provides recognition of a dedication to skill development.

A great campus and city

Our campus has excellent facilities, including a state-of-the-art sports centre, a professional arts organisation, diverse student study spaces, and a range of social facilities linked to our nine colleges. With easy access to the beautiful Lake District and Yorkshire Dales, and the nature paths and ponds that surround our main campus buildings, it is easy to get out into nature. Good transportation links make it equally easy to take part in city life - whether in Lancaster or through easy rail connections to Manchester, Liverpool, London or Glasgow.
