Penalties for non-payment

Understand the implications of non-payment of your tuition fees whilst a student of the University.

 

When registering with the University, students agree to comply with the University Rules, including payment of tuition fees by the due dates.  Students who fail to make full payment on time will be subject to the following debt management procedures:

  • Reminders sent to student’s email account
  • Student advised to contact Credit Control
  • Credit Control telephone student
  • Student warned of potential legal action (e.g. referral to Debt Collection Agency)

 Two

 Delayed by:

60 Days

75 Days

  • Legal letter sent to term and home time addresses, and via email
  • 14 days from date of letter to make payment before being referred to Debt Collection Agency
  • Referral to Collection Agency – interest and legal fees added to the debt, and both your credit rating and future employment could be affected

  Three

 

 

 End of academic year

  • Forced suspension of registration – student not allowed to continue with course for a period of 12 months, during which time full payment of debt must be made
  • If here on a student visa, student must leave the UK
  • Written confirmation sent to email, term time and home address
  • Departments, colleges and any funding and government bodies informed
  • Collection Agency continue to chase for payment

Four

Over 12 months, following suspension

  • Student’s registration with the University is terminated
  • Written confirmation sent to email and home address
  • Departments, colleges and any funding and government bodies informed
  • Collection Agency continue to chase for payment and the University carries out legal action (e.g. CCJs)

If the student is in their final year of study, they will not be permitted to attend their graduation ceremony unless any outstanding balance is cleared in full.  Depending on the proportion of debt, the University may also withhold any certificates and transcripts until full payment is received.  Final year students with a relevant debt are identified and written to in June. 

Where a tuition fee is being paid by a sponsor, the University will continue to chase the sponsor for payment up to Stage 1.  After Stage 1, the liability will revert to the student and payment will become their responsibility.
