Undergraduate English Language Requirements
If your first language is not English you will be asked for a recognised English language qualification.
The level of English you will be asked for depends on the degree course you are applying for.
In addition to the overall score, the University will require minimum scores for each part of the IELTS or PTE Academic test.
The University accepts the following international English language qualifications for entry to undergraduate degree courses:
|Recognised Qualification||Standard Entry Level|
|IELTS||6.5 (with at least 5.5 in each component)|
|Pearson PTE Academic||62 (with a minimum of 51 in the four Communicative Skills)|
|Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)||Grade B|
|Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency
in English (CPE)
|GCSE / IGCSE / O level English||Grade C|
|TOEFL iBT||93 overall (with at least 17 in Listening, 18 in Reading, 20 in Speaking, 17 in Writing)|
Please note that some Science and Engineering courses require a minimum of IELTS 6.0 or Pearson PTE Academic 55.
Specific requirements for Medicine A100 - English language proficiency: If you are applying from outside the UK or if English is not your first language, you must demonstrate proficiency in English through either IELTS (Academic, at least 7.0 in each component) or the Pearson PTE Academic qualification (at least 70 in each component) before applying.
The University may make changes to the above requirements at any time.
The University also accepts the English language component examination from some school-leaving group qualifications, for example, the International Baccalaureate and the European Baccalaureate. Please see the International qualifications for undergraduate entry page for a full list of accepted group qualifications.
Following recent revised guidance from the UK Visas and Immigration Office (part of the Home Office), Lancaster University is continuing to accept TOEFL for entry onto academic programmes of study.
Please note, however, that TOEFL tests are no longer recognised by the UK Visas and Immigration Office for entry onto pre-sessional English language courses starting in the UK after 1 October 2014. If you are considering taking the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) pre-sessional course offered by Lancaster University, and would require a Tier 4 (General) student visa, you would not be able to use TOEFL as evidence of your English language ability, and we would only be able to accept an IELTS or Pearson PTE Academic score.
English Language Preparation Programmes
If you do not meet the minimum English language entry requirement for your chosen undergraduate degree course, you can take our on-campus four-week English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programme.
The EAP programme is designed to help students improve their academic language and study skills before starting their main degree programme, which can help you to be more successful in your degree programme.
Our Undergraduate Admissions Office will automatically consider you for the EAP if you have an English level 0.5 IELTS or equivalent below the minimum English entry requirement for your degree course. This is done as part of the decision on your undergraduate degree course application. You will be sent full information and application details with your course offer.
International Foundation Year
Lancaster University offers international students (non EU/UK) who do not meet the direct entry requirements for an undergraduate degree course the option of completing a degree preparation programme at the university’s International Study Centre.
