Course Overview

Lancaster's combined Dance and Theatre degree is taught by the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts (LICA). This course is ideal for anyone with strong academic and creative abilities who wants to study contemporary dance alongside Theatre.

Your Theatre courses will provide you with the opportunity to learn about innovative twentieth and twenty first century theatre and performance through an exciting and varied mix of theoretical and practical approaches. You will gain critical and creative skills which open up possibilities for working in theatre, while making you attractive to a wide range of other employers.  In Dance not only will you develop as a dancer through weekly technique classes across all three years, but through lectures and choreographic projects you will study the methods and significance of modern and contemporary dance in terms of the environments in which it occurs:

  • The site: dance in unusual rural and urban locations
  • The stage: dance in relation to costume, lighting, set and sound
  • The screen: dance for the camera, motion capture and telepresence

You'll begin your degree with core modules including an Introduction to Theatre, Modern Dance and Modernism in the Arts. In your second year, you'll study subjects such as Performance Composition, Postmodern Dance and our LICA interdisciplinary module Critical Reflections.  You will then complete your degree with a LICA Creative Enterprise module, Applied Theatre Practice or a Dance Project and further optional Theatre modules such as Sensational Performances and New Scenographies in Performance (Theatre).
