What do we do?

The Overseas Programmes Unit at Lancaster University

The role of the Overseas Programmes Unit at Lancaster University is to develop and support undergraduate and postgraduate programmes established at Lancaster partner universities and colleges overseas. Please see below for details of our existing network. The number of our partners and programmes is growing, so keep your eye on this page for new developments!

What and where are our programmes?

In collaboration with Lancaster's partner universities and colleges overseas, the Overseas Programmes Unit is responsible for the development and management of:

1. 1 + 3 Foundation Programmes

What is a Foundation Programme? Why might I need to do one?

If you are from a country where the secondary (High School) education system is broader than that of the UK, or is one year shorter, you may need to take a foundation programme before you are considered ready to enter an UK undergraduate degree scheme.

The Foundation Programme will provide you with a range of courses to ensure that you are properly prepared to enter a degree course at Lancaster. If you take a Foundation course at one of our partner universities, Lancaster undertakes to make you a conditional offer of entry, an advantage you would not enjoy with general foundation programmes.

  • Foundation Programmes - UK Based (ISC)Lancaster has its own Foundation Programme on campus at our new International Study Centre. This programme is managed by International Study Group.
  • Foundation Programmes - China Lancaster runs in-country one-year Foundation Programmes with selected partner institutions in China. These are for students who wish to stay in their own country while they prepare for undergraduate study at Lancaster
  • Foundation Programmes - Nigeria Lancaster has established a one-year Foundation Programmes with a selected partner institution in Nigeria. This is for students who wish to stay in their own country while they prepare for undergraduate study at Lancaster

What is a 2 + 2 Programme?

A 2 + 2 programme means that you take a two year course of study at one of our partner institutions before entering your chosen degree scheme at Lancaster. In the second year of the programme in addition to language courses you also take courses in the area which you are going to study for your degree. You enter the Lancaster degree scheme in Year 2. This means you study for a further two years - hence 2 + 2. 'Other' programmes take a slightly different format such as 1+2 or 3 + 2.

We have 2 + 2 and 'other' programmes in

3. Pre-Masters programmes

We are in the process of making agreements with some of our partner universities in China for students to take a pre-Masters course that lead to a qualification for entry to Lancaster. Currently, these are in Beijing Foreign Studies University.
