Medieval English Theatre Meeting 18-19 March 2005

Travel Instructions

Distances: Southampton is roughly 3+ hours driving from Nottingham, 3.5 from Cambridge; six hours from Lancaster; 90 minutes from the S.W. London end of the M3 (in all cases add a bit for Friday travelling). We are aiming to meet at 6 in the Hotel and go to the restaurant for about 7 (to eat at 7.30). My mobile phone number, if you are in difficulties, or want to keep in touch about your progress is 07792 874 503

By train or by coach If you come by train, the simplest and cheapest thing is to get off at Southampton Central (not Parkway) and take a taxi from the rank outside to the “Elizabeth House Hotel, on the Avenue”. If you come by coach there is no taxi rank at the terminal. Just go into the coach terminal foyer and ask them to phone for a taxi. The taxi driver will then come in and get you.

By air (internal) The quickest and best way, if you are near an airport serving Southampton. This will cut down an awful lot of driving and can be cheap. At Southampton airport get a taxi (you “book” them in the foyer) to “Southampton: Elizabeth House Hotel, on the Avenue”. I will return you to the airport for whatever flight you choose.

By car from the north From the north: take the M3 from London or, if coming from the Midlands via the A34 from Oxford, join the M3 at Winchester.
Go down M3
At junction 13 the M3 divides showing either M27 West or M27 East. It does not matter which you take, provided that you immediately afterwards
Leave the M3 at Junction 14 (signposted A33 Southampton). It’s now plain sailing.
Stay in the A33 lane (middle lane) and take the second exit at the roundabout (i.e., just carry straight on at the roundabout).
* The Elizabeth House Hotel is on the left c.2.4 miles straight down the road from this roundabout.
You will go through another large roundabout (keep in the left hand lane and, in effect, just carry on the main road)
You will go straight over a major crossroads with lights
You will pass a large red brick church on your left (Avenue St Andrews)
When you pass this church the Elizabeth House Hotel is only a matter of a couple of hundred yards away, in the second block on the left.
Slow down; you are coming towards another major junction with lights and the Hotel is on the left before this junction, and just before the Travelodge on the corner of the junction.
There is plenty of parking.

By car from the east You are on the M27 heading west
Leave the M27 at Junction 5 (Southampton Airport).
At the foot of the slip road turn left (i.e., take the first exit). You are on dual carriageway. Move into the right hand lane and
Take the first right (lights controlled) into Bassett Green Road.
Go up Bassett Green Road as far as you can until it swings round into a roundabout.
Take the first exit.
You are now in the same place as those coming down the M3; see * above and follow instructions from there.

By car from the west (check that the A36 through Salisbury is fully open if you are planning to take the scenic route) You are on the M27 heading east
Leave the M27 at Junction 5 (Southampton Airport) and take the fourth exit (this will involve going round the roundabout and back under the motorway), heading for Southampton.
When you are on the dual carriageway, move into the right lane and
Take the first right (lights controlled) into Bassett Green Road.
Go up Bassett Green Road as far as you can until it swings round into a roundabout.
Take the first exit.
You are now in the same place as those coming down the M3; see * above and follow instructions from there.
