Ms Maureen Pemberton was in charge of the Department of Western
Manuscripts Slide Collection at the Bodleian Library, Oxford, the earliest and still the most
comprehensive of its kind. She had an inimitable knowledge of medieval religious iconography,
and was a leading authority on wallpaintings, which she photographed extensively. She was also
involved with the Joculatores Oxonienses, designing and making visually authentic props. On her
untimely death from cancer in 1996, her executors donated her copiously annotated collection
of slides and other iconographical material to the York Doomsday Project. Doomsday was a
popular subject for medieval church wallpaintings, usually set over the chancel arch where it
dominated the congregation.
