From Mr R W Wallbank

"The two Wallbank Brothers are both my uncles. My late father Frank was their brother. He didn't talk a lot about them but this is as much as I know. Richard (Dick) & John (Jack) came from a family of ten children, four brothers and six sisters. The other brother was Tom and two of the sisters were Nellie & Fanny, sadly I can't remember the others. My father said that Jack was killed at the first battle at Ypres in 1914 and Dick at the second battle at Ypres in 1915. They are also both remembered with honour at the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial.

My father Frank & Tommy were too young for the army in 1914 but during the Second World War Tommy joined up and my father was a fireman in the AFS & NFS working in various places including both London & Manchester. Thankfully they both came through the conflict safely. Tommy died a few years before my Father in the 1980s.

Richard being the eldest was named after my Granddad and I was named after him of which I'm very proud."

Mrs Irene Marchment, now 85 years old, very kindly supplied the following information about her Father John Edward Wilson:

My Fathers name is on the Lancaster Memorial. I go there every Remembrance Sunday and put some flowers on the Cenotaph. He was John Edward Wilson, a Gunner, 164999 of the Royal Garrison Artillery. He died on the 9th of May 1918 and is buried in Plot 2 Row B Grave 25 in The Penes British Cemetery France. I have been to see his grave; it was all very emotional, but I'm glad I went. Some the pictures we took are shown here. I was one year old on 13th May 1918, and my Mother received a ten shilling note for my birthday from my Father; alas he was already dead. My Dad worked as a labourer at Williamson's, then later at the Theatre in Dalton Square, the Hippodrome, which later became the County Cinema and is now Palatine House. I've still got his commemorative Bronze medal and a picture is also shown here. I hope this is of some use to you.

The Sergeant-Major tells me that his last word was "Mother'. He was buried this morning about 8.15 in the little cemetery behind our lines, and as there was no Wesleyan Chaplain I read the burial service over him. On all sides I hear a splendid account of him and the good life he led and I feel that though -- ~.~~ parted from us now God has work for him to do elsewhere."

Deceased's brother states that he was hit in the ~ ."., He did not get to see him before he was buried. lower part of the stomach and died in about five minutes. Deceased who was 22 years of age, attended the National School and for about two years before enlisting in October last was a teacher in Wesley Sunday School which he had attended since childhood. He was employed in the pattern room at Lune Mills. His brother William was in training with him at Blackpool and they went to the front together. At home they were almost inseperable.
