A thorough review of the current examination system based on undergraduate students and lecturers in Sunway University.

Examination system serves its purpose of assessing students’ understanding and knowledge. However, examination has its limitation in assessing undergraduate students comprehensively. Apart from the highly stressful condition associated with examination, examination was also criticised for confining students’ critical thinking skills, which has made thorough comprehension on studies impossible. When it comes to real-life job practice, fresh graduates often struggle to deal with real-world sitaution using what they have learnt from university (Whelan & Brown, 2011).    


‘Speaking from my recent job experience, I find examination did not help me ultilise my knowledge and skills in real life job practice.’    


This research is purposed to review the current examination system and propose a more comprehensive way of assessing students based on the prespectives of undergraduate students and lecturers. 


Based on the statement above, I have conducted interview sessions with undergraduate students and lecturers to understand their perspectives on current examination system and recommend a more comprehensive assessment system. 


I have prepared 2 sets of interview, with 5 question each for lecturers and students. Below are the questions:

After the interview sessions, I have found out:


The first 2 questions are to familarize the participants with the topic. 


Students:

1. Two participants thought that it is worth to put in all effort to obtain good grade for a better future. The other three participants stated they will not sacrifice their time and energy solely on study as there are other things that are worth enjoying in life too. 

2. One participant thought that understanding a topic is highly dependent on the interest of the students towards the topic. Two participant stated that examination did not help them to understand the topic comprehensively as they will only memorise the theories for the examination. Only two participants agreed examination helps to stimulate their thinking. 

3. Overall, participants stated that examination is not an effective way of assessing a student. As one’s memory skills is being judged, it is more important to take other skills into consideration such as problem-solving skill or practical skill.

4. Only one participant supported written examination as sole assessment system. Other participants have suggested stimulator test, real-life case study, research, and weekly chapter assessments instead of a final exam that comprises of the entire syllabus at one go.


Lecturers

1. Participants thought that examination is vital, but it should not be the sole assessment method as not every students can perform well in formal examination. Examination also did not assess students in various skills. 

2. One participant has stated that most of the students understand the topic, while other participants think that students are not interested to understand the topic in depth. Students only study in the hopes of passing the exam instead of excelling in it. 

3. Overall, participants are of the opinion that examination is one of the effective system to evaluate students, but other kind of assessment method should be used to assess students’ other skills as well.

4. Participants have also suggested that courseworks, case studies, dialogue and assignments. It is imprortant to assess student’s abilities to write, read, communicate and memorize, but it is impossible to come out with a comprehensive assessment method that can cover every single aspects.  


Discussion:

Combining the perspectives of students and lecturers, examination system is a neccessary tool to assess students, but it should not be used as the sole assessment method. 

Society has high expectation towards grades. For instance, parents will praise their children for getting high score, and employers usually favour students with good grade. Eventually, it gives students the impression that good grade is everything. As a result, students are obssessed with good grade, and it caused students to memorize the theories rather than understand it. As per comment from lecturers, students study to pass, not to understand in depth. Under this circumstance, examination has lost it purpose. While some students can be benefitted from examination,  we shouldn’t ignore the fact that examination is not entirely helpful in understanding a topic. 

Moreover, examination is not effective in assessing students because it only focuses on memory skill. Other skills are being neglected. It is unfair to some students who do not have excellent memory skills. Examination should be designed comprehensively to ensure that every skill is being aassessed. 

Hence, assessment should be comprised with more assignments, real-life case study, research or dialogue. Non-examination based assessment can motivate students to think critically, and it is better than requesting students to sit for 3 hours examination under stressful condition. Furthermore, assignment can assess students in term of communication, reading and writing. Non-examination based assessments are more effective in preparing students for the real-world job situation. 


Conclusion

In conclusion, examination should be comprised of other assessment methods to ensure fair and comprehensive assessment is used to evaluate students. With more flexible approach to examination, students can comprehend the knowledge easily as they are able to utilize the knowledge in workplace. This research provides reference and guidance for lecturers and also universities to revise the current examination system. However, this research has its limitation. The interview session was set for 15 minutes. Due to the time limitation, participants did not have sufficient time to think deeper for each of the question asked thoroughout the interview.

The Untold stories of Followers

‘A leader is born not made.
This sentiment has been controversially dated to the 1800s when the leaders at that time attempted to indoctrinate the idea of superiority amongst followers. A special pass at birth. Consequently, praising charisma is the main attribute of a successful leader. 
Much has changed since then, with newer theories of servant leadership and more popularly followership, which decentralizes power at the top and spreads downwards.

This begs the question as to why was a leader-centric model was the de facto and not vice-versa?


The answer is charisma.


Charismatic leadership grows from personal magnetism that inspires passion amongst followers.


Popper, M. (2012) argues that humans innately crave leaders in their lives. More specifically they crave a ‘father figure’.  During a time of crisis, the dormant construct of ‘security’ often awakens in the form of the father figure’. Much like how Hitler exalted a father figure, that search for a parental figure was further compounded by the fact that the Germans were stripped of their military might, on top of prejudiced government at that time. This made it easier for the German population to dump their trust in Hitler to fix the concurrent issues of a weakened country as a whole, compared to questioning/rationalizing the ethics of his propaganda, during his rise. 


As Khurana suggests that this trend towards hiring ‘charismatic’ individuals may explain the detriments of a firm’s hardships.
Take, for example, the establishment of Armstrong into AT&T’s stock has skyrocketed to $4 billion, with his first act as a celebrity CEO, his aggressive acquisition of cable TV,  and Internet delivery systems, has tanked. From $ 64 per stock, it sells at a major loss of $10 per share. This shows to say that charisma and rationality cannot coincide. Unfortunately, why do we choose the former?

What is followership?
It is to be effective followers, with their team’s purpose above their personal agenda. Ira Chaleff explains it clearly that it is the purpose of the team, that links followers and its leaders, not titles or hierarchy, that is merely a social construct of authority in a work environment. 

In Courageous Followers, the idea of followership and leadership is one that alludes to followers being the listener and leaders being the speakers. A speaker is only present when there are listeners, any lesser of a listener, the speaker is merely an announcer.

Retail images are used as a strategy to meet customer needs and wants (Babin, Darden & Griffin, 1994). Retailers need to balance out the utilitarian and hedonic values to ensure the strategy applied will generate profit. If hedonic is higher than utilitarian or utilitarian is higher than hedonic, that means they failed to meet the self-image of the customer with their retail image (Babin, Darden & Griffin, 1994).


Problem Statement


Contrary to western countries like the USA, Malaysia’s retail sector is still booming. However, even with many new retail stores and shopping centre emerging in the country, it is not confirmed that they are attracting the right target market that fits their retail image. For example Pavilion – a high-end shopping centre. Are the customers visiting the mall making any kind of transaction in there? Retail stores are constantly promoting their image but they keep failing to attract the right people. This is because people who visit a shopping centre or retail stores are no longer there for buying products or service (shopping experience) but merely for air-conditioning. It serves as more of a social gathering spot than a retail centre. With this, it can be seen that even with heavy competition, many retailers have failed to apply the correct retail strategy. Thus, this will affect them in long run becoming the reason why many retail stores are closing their business in Malaysia.



SIGNIFICANCE OF RESEARCH


Notably, there is a need to identify how self-image and store image have a role in determining the correctness of the retail strategy. This study would contribute significantly to the existing literature by looking from the Asian perspective.

The information from this study would be beneficial for the industry players. This study will help the industry players to understand the combination of retail image elements in generating more shoppers. It will also help the retailers to get a perspective of what retail image to focus on to boost their sales that will contribute to the country’s economy.





SCOPE OF STUDY


The purpose of this study is to identify whether the retail stores in Malaysia are applying the correct strategy from a customer perspective. More specifically the generation Y of Malaysia that born between 1983 and 1999 (Mahalingam, 2019) because this group of people are very active in social life and like to visit retail stores and shopping centres. Most of the people in this generation are currently working and those who are studying are not far behind from graduating and finding a job. Some are also married and have a young family.

Since retirement is not any time soon, this generation likes to spend their money lavishly. Generation Y is also known as the biggest spenders among the Malaysian population. This phenomenon was chosen as there is limited literature written in the past on the retail strategy of Malaysia. Moreover, new retail stores are opening in massive numbers while there is a number of retail stores which are closing down and facing low sales even though the number of visitations is high.

INTRODUCTION

Numerous studies suggest that poor mental health among students is increasing (Knapstad et al, 2019, Siverston et al, 2019, Tung et al, 2018, Rotenstein et al, 2016). Despite, higher education being associated with better-informed health choices and improved social support (Freudenberg and Ruglis, 2007), ongoing stress as a result of academic pressures has been linked with reduced quality of life (Ribeiro et al, 2017) and susceptibility to other mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression (Moylan et al, 2013). 


AIMS OF STUDY

This study aims to critically review current strategies and initiatives employed by UK HEIs around the provision and promotion of positive mental health in students. In addition, the study will scrutinise the ‘Office For Students’ among other structure frameworks and policies and analyse existing research that examines the problems students face in HEIs’ that may also account for the drop-out rates.



University drop-out rates in association with poor mental health are a global issue with findings in Danish (Hjorth et al, 2016) and French students (Saïas et al, 2014) as well as british students all linking declining mental health with a greater risk of dropping out of higher education (Baik et al, 2015). In Finland, a study of 13-17 year old students concluded that poor mental health was linked with adverse academic performance, insufficient reading and writing and poorer social relationships (Fröjd et al, 2008). Depression and anxiety are the most likely developed MHC in students (Thorley, 2017). 


LITERATURE REVIEW

STUDENT WELLBEING is declining (Neves and Hilman, 2017) and pre-existing mental health conditions may be exacerbated during the COVID-19 lock-down (Yao et al, 2020) as well as emerging anxiety due to worrying about family (Cao et al, 2020).

 

POOR MENTAL HEALTH is negatively associated with student’s academic outcome (Sæle et al, 2016, Gnambs and Hanfstingl, 2015), performance and attainment (Patalay et al, 2015, Veldman et al, 2014).

 



CONCLUSION

HEIs in England are at risk of encouraging unhealthy behaviours such as drinking, poor diet and sedentary behaviour through the range of social activities, prominent focus on nightlife and community student outlets. More so a significant lack of emphasis placed on healthy eating, food preparation, exercise, money management and academic focus can inadequately prepare students for the transition to adult life and independency. Preventative measures rather than ‘treatments’ for self-reported mental health and support needs are necessary to achieve long-term behaviour change.




ACADEMIC RELATED STRESS (ARS) was said to be the number one cause for student anxiety followed by financial stress (Jones et al, 2018). A German study involving 456 undergraduate medical students displayed lower academic performance as a result of ARS (Kötter et al, 2017). In addition, motivation becomes debilitated (Liu, 2015) and students become disengaged (Benner and Curl, 2018) due to ARS. Walburg (2014) noted that preventing stress and burnout reduced the rate of drop-out as well and improving academic achievement.



FINANCIAL STRESS affects students every year alongside their studies and has been attached to the deteriation in student mental health (Richardson et al, 2015). Financial stress is also linked with an increased likelihood of discontinuation of studies (Britt et al, 2017) and seen as causing students to seek paid work in place of education (Tran et al, 2018, Joo et al, 2008). A 2019 survey of over 3000 students in the UK (Bushi, 2019) found that 79% were worried about having sufficient money to live off and 52% of students were tormented by the thought of loan repayments.


PHYSICAL INACTIVITY (PA) is seen as a cause of declining mental health (Teychenne et al, 2015).

Studies have associated overuse of social media with risk of MHC such as depression and impaired cognitive function (Syväoja et al, 2014) and it was noted that students were spending an average of 2 hours a day on social media at the expense of PA (Calestine et al, 2017).

Students who don’t study a physical education are less likely to engage in PA (Park and Kim, 2013). Raised awareness of PA and varied activities is said to entice students (Deliens et al, 2015).



OBESITY causes students to be ‘at risk of drop-out’ (Lanza and Huang, 2015) and poorer academic achievement (Arora et al, 2013, McCann and Roberts, 2013) as a result of disengagement (Finn et al, 2018). The reduction in parental influence is a paramount cause for the change in food preferences and eating habits in students (Fedewa et al, 2014, Hilger et al, 2017, Barnes et al, 2012) and subsequently university students are more than likely to gain weight during their two years (Brown et al, 2014).


DRINKING and subsequent MHC are a leading public health issue (Bell and Britton, 2014, WHO, 2012) and is a cause of poorer academic performance (Patte et al, 2017) along with SMOKING and DRUG USE (Lee et al, 2013a). Student drinking also causes a greater likelihood of drop-out (Kelly et al, 2015, Latvala et al, 2014).

A poorer Mental Composite Score and increased depressive symptoms were seen in smoking students (Milic et al, 2020) and it is suggested that continuous substance use among students reduced retention (Sillins et al, 2015) and so increases rates of drop-out (Wang and Fredericks, 2014, Arria et al, 2013).



OFFICE FOR STUDENTS
Rates of poor mental health among university students has tripled since 2012-2013 to 2017-2018 s (OFS, 2019). Students with a reported mental health condition presented lower rates of progression.

Subjects allied to medicine that may include nutrition, complimentary medicine, therapies and wellbeing, (UCAS, 2014) report the lowest level of poor mental health (OFS, 2021). In the same way that there is a positive response to teaching mental health, perhaps we could consider those studying an allied health subject obtaining a broader understanding of health and wellbeing and so enabling them to become more resilient to poor mental health (McAllister et al, 2017). Higher-achieving HEIs reported higher levels of anxiety compared to specialist, medium and low tariff HEIs (OFS, 2021, Luther et al, 2020).



METHODOLOGY

Out of over 166 “recognised bodies” (Study in the UK, 2021) or universities within the UK, a random selection (Elfil and Negida, 2017) of 20 of those residing in England (140) will be used for a scoping review of HEI websites (as the current ‘prospectus’) (Firth et al, 2019, Young, 2008). The presentation of results will be delivered in the form of SWOT diagram, as it was decided that this template allowed summation of key themes and enabled the study to conclude and  present key recommendations for HEI development.

FINDINGS

Out of the 20 HEI reviewed, none provided on-campus guidance and support for all of the contributing factors to student wellbeing and happiness as outlined in the literature review. Among all the HEI’s in the study, the area of greatest service variation was mental health support and determinant of student wellbeing most underrepresented was Nutrition. The most common threat identified was the risk of student addiction to alcohol, smoking and substance use due to lack of preventative measures and services for support. My research has come from my passion as a professional leader in Early Years. I am the owner of The Kinderhouse Nursery in Lancashire.

The new Early Years Foundation Stage 2020 is set to come into effect from Sept 2021. Piloting the new changes are reception teachers only. WHY not the 450,000 Early Years Practitioners?

The Early Years practitioners work with children every day, like teachers, although there were no nurseries chosen to be part of the trial.

Leaders within the sector think that there is no current evidence or research to suggest that the framework needs to be changed.

The changes are narrowing the Early Learning Goals which could mean that children are only being prepared for school, not the concept of Early Chidlhood.

 

 


The Teaching Schools Council gave recommendations for the Reception Class to be become more aligned with Year One in primary schools.

This has led my research to look at the effects this will have on learning and development of our 0-5 year olds which include Reception children. Aligning them with more school readiness outocmes.
