November 2022 marks 900 years since the foundation of the priory at Carlisle Cathedral in 1122. To celebrate this historic occasion, and supported by Carlisle Cathedral, the Regional Heritage Centre will travel to this historic landmark for a full day of presentations in the beautiful Fratry Hall.

Our speakers will look at the context of the development of the priory, including RHC Director Professor Fiona Edmonds on the Church in early medieval Carlisle; distinguished historian of Carlisle Dr Henry Summerson on the growth of the city before it was ravaged by fire in 1292; Marta Alberti (Vindolanda Trust) will focus on evidence for early Christianity from Vindolanda and Hadrian's Wall; Professor Janet Burton (University of Wales Trinity St David) will look at the origins and spread of the Augustinians in England and Wales. Please note this event will be for in-person attendance only.

Guidance on travel to the RHC Study Event at Carlisle Cathedral, Saturday 26 November

Due to the national rail strike which has been called for this date, we advise people who have booked to attend the event to allow plenty of time to find a parking place as Carlisle’s car parks are likely to be particularly busy. Driving into the Historic Quarter isn’t advisable as there is only limited on-street parking and there is a one-way system.

These are the three car parks which are recommended by the venue:

• West Walls/Town Dyke Orchard – this is the closest, giving access by steps up to the Abbey Street entrance
• Castle/ Devonshire Walk
• Caldew Riverside

Please note that there is no charge for parking in these car parks on a Saturday.

Fee for this event: £30 (£27 for current Friends and Patrons of the Centre)

Lunch: *An optional soup and sandwich lunch is available for pre-booking only at £8; lunch bookings are strictly limited and we will update our website when the lunch bookings have sold out. Food and drinks can be bought from the onsite café bar, or there are a number of other options close by in the town centre. Alternatively, you are welcome to bring your own lunch.
