Lancaster’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is home to over 20 disciplines, with many placing in the top 10 in major UK league tables and top 100 in world rankings.
The Times and Sunday Times University of the Year
Three subjects in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences are ranked no. 1 in the UK by the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019: Creative Writing, Criminology and German. 12 other Arts and Social Sciences subjects are ranked in the top ten. French and Iberian Languages (Spanish) are placed 2nd, Art & Design, Linguistics and Sociology are placed 3rd, Communications & Media (including Film) and Social Work are placed 4th, Theatre is joint 5th, History 6th, Politics 7th, English 8th and Religious Studies 9th.
Lancaster is ranked 6th in the UK in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019, having achieved the accolade of being named University of the Year in 2018.
QS World Rankings by Subject
The global influence of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is confirmed by the latest QS World University Rankings (2019). Linguistics is placed 12th in the world, while Art & Design, English Language & Literature, Religious Studies, and Sociology are all in the world top 100.
The Complete University Guide
1st in the UK for Creative Writing
Lancaster University has continued its consistent top ten performance in the 2020 Complete University Guide ranking, rising to 7th in the UK overall and 3rd for graduate prospects.
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences has several subjects in the top five in the UK including Creative Writing (1), Sociology (2), Art and Design (3), French (3), Spanish (3), German (4), Linguistics (4), and Social Work (4).
Top ten subjects include Theology and Religious Studies (6), History (7), Drama, Dance and Cinematics which includes Theatre (7), English (8), and Communication and Media Studies which includes Film Studies (8).
Law (which includes Criminology) is placed first in the UK for graduate prospects
This reflects the success of graduates in finding professional positions or continuing on to further study after they graduate.
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is among the best in the world, with two subject areas featuring in the top 50 in the 2019 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.

In the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014), a number of subjects are ranked in the top ten in the UK:
Politics, Philosophy and Religious Studies (PPR) (submitted to Theology and Religious Studies) was 3rd overall on actual grade point average (GPA), including an outstanding 1st on Impact and 2nd on Environment. It was also ranked 1st overall on intensity-weighted GPA. Sociology was 4th overall in actual GPA, 2nd on Impact, 6th on Outputs and 6th on Environment. It too was ranked 1st overall on intensity-weighted GPA. English, Creative Writing, Linguistics and European Languages and Cultures gained a 3rd on Environment and 7th on Impact. Lancaster Institute for Contemporary Arts - 7th on Environment and 7th on high intensity-weighted ranking. Education Research - 6th on high intensity-weighted ranking.
#1 in the UK for Criminology
Lancaster University has continued its consistent top ten performance in 2020, ranking 7th in the UK. The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences has several subjects in the top ten including Criminology in 1st place, Sociology which is ranked 3rd, Social Work 4th and Modern Languages and Linguistics 4th. Also in the top ten are History 5th, Art 6th, Religious Studies and Theology 6th, Drama and Dance 6th and English and Creative Writing 10th.
