Lancaster’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is home to over 20 disciplines, with many placing in the top 10 in major UK league tables and top 100 in world rankings.
The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021
Subjects in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences continue to be highly ranked in major UK league tables. Several subjects are ranked in the UK top ten by the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021 including Social Work (3), Theatre (3), and Linguistics (4). Social Work is ranked joint first in the UK for graduate prospects, which confirms the high quality of the placements that are provided during the programme and the careers support that is available for students.
Other subjects in the Faculty that are highly ranked by the Times and Sunday Times league table include Creative Writing (7), Criminology (8), Religious Studies ((9) and Philosophy (10).
Lancaster University is ranked 10th in the UK in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021.
QS World Rankings by Subject
The global influence of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is confirmed by the latest QS World University Rankings (2021). Linguistics retains its 12th place ranking, reinforcing that Lancaster is a world leader in this field. English Language & Literature retains its 50th place. The Faculty is ranked 86th in the world for Arts and Humanities.
Several of the Faculty’s other core subjects are also placed in the world top 100: Art and Design, Sociology, Theology Divinity and Religious Studies.
The Complete University Guide 2021
1st in the UK for Creative Writing
Lancaster University has continued its consistent top ten performance in the 2021 Complete University Guide ranking, and is placed 8th in the UK overall and 3rd for graduate prospects.
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences has many subjects in the top ten in the UK including: Creative Writing (1), Social Work (2), Linguistics (3), Art and Design (4), Drama, Dance and Cinematics which includes Theatre (4), Communication and Media Studies which includes Film Studies (6), French (7), Theology and Religious Studies (7), Sociology (7), Spanish (9), German (9) and History (10).
Top twenty subjects include English (11), Philosophy (12), Politics (12), and Law, which includes Criminology (15).
The Faculty has an outstanding track record for graduate prospects with several subjects ranked best in the UK: Law (which includes Criminology), French, Spanish and Criminology are all ranked number 1 by the Complete University Guide. This reflects the success of graduates in finding professional positions or continuing on to further study after they graduate.
Other subjects that rank highly for graduate prospects are Linguistics (joint 2nd), Art and Design (3), History (3), and Sociology (joint 4th).
In addition, two subjects are ranked first for student satisfaction: Theatre Studies and Linguistics.

In the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014), a number of subjects are ranked in the top ten in the UK:
Politics, Philosophy and Religious Studies (PPR) (submitted to Theology and Religious Studies) was 3rd overall on actual grade point average (GPA), including an outstanding 1st on Impact and 2nd on Environment. It was also ranked 1st overall on intensity-weighted GPA. Sociology was 4th overall in actual GPA, 2nd on Impact, 6th on Outputs and 6th on Environment. It too was ranked 1st overall on intensity-weighted GPA. English, Creative Writing, Linguistics and Languages and Cultures gained a 3rd on Environment and 7th on Impact. Lancaster Institute for Contemporary Arts - 7th on Environment and 7th on high intensity-weighted ranking. Education Research - 6th on high intensity-weighted ranking.
