About our research

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Lancaster University holds true to the University’s original mission to be a pioneer in challenging established thinking and championing new ideas through high quality research.

We are field leaders in many areas such as Design led research, Mobilities research, Corpus Linguistics, Energy Demand, Religious Studies and Technology Enhanced Learning. Over 200 of our academic staff and research staff were entered into the recent 2014 REF exercise across 7 different units of assessment.

The Faculty is committed to continually investing in resources, our talented academic research staff and doctoral researchers to ensure that they are supported in developing and pursing their research ideas. In 2012/13 up to £2 million was invested by the Faculty in direct support of staff research activity.

The Faculty contains a number of specialist research centres conducting nationally and internationally-acclaimed research in a broad range of subject areas.

Lancaster’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences has a reputation for interdisciplinarity, and has a commitment to promoting and encouraging collaboration.

Knowledge Exchange

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is committed to transferring our knowledge and skills to support social, economic and cultural organisations and stakeholders in the North West and beyond. Departments across the Faculty are working with a range of commercial enterprises and cultural industries, public sector and voluntary organisations, educational providers, the National Health Service, regional bodies and local authorities. We aim to position FASS as an excellent provider of third mission activity in its many forms: evaluation services, learning and skills development, student projects and placements, commercially sponsored research, Knowledge Transfer Partnerships and research partnerships.
