Research Training Funding

Please bear in mind current travel restrictions due to Covid-19. For any information, please refer to the University Covid-19 FAQ page and the University travel policy page.

The Faculty offers two sources of funding to support FASS research students' training:

  • The Postgraduate Conference Presentation Grant provides financial support for PhD students who are giving presentations at conferences in the UK and overseas. Until further notice, only online conferences will be funded; please see further instructions for exceptions. There is a limit of £250 per award for conferences in the country of residence, and £500 for conferences outside the country of residence, and £250 for online conferences. Applications must be submitted within defined rounds (Michaelmas, Lent, Summer) but only one conference per annum will be funded. Once the total budget per round has been exhausted, applications will close.
  • The Postgraduate Research Skills Training Fund provides grants of up to £400 to cover costs (eg accommodation, registration and travel) directly incurred by participation in a training course/event. Until further notice, only online courses will be funded; please see further instructions for exceptions. The training undertaken must provide research skills/methods (as opposed to the acquisition of knowledge on a topic/discipline) necessary to the successful completion of your doctoral project and that are not delivered through the FASS Research Training Programme. Students are limited to one successful applications per annum. Once the total budget for 2020/2021 has been exhausted, the fund will close.
