Junior Common Room

The Junior Common Room is a combined Wi-Fi enabled study and social space, with play zones for pool, darts and table tennis, making it a great place to relax, do some work or have some fun. Most of the events arranged by the JCR Exec will either be in the JCR or start off here.

Bowland Bar

The Trough of Bowland

The 'Trough of Bowland’ is the oldest bar on campus, offering a cosy traditional interior. The venue serves a range of drinks and a seasonal menu. The bar staff regularly coordinate with the JCR Exec to coordinate student events. Here is the current Bowland Bar Food Menu. For more information on campus bars, cafes and restaurants, visit the University main site

Study Space

There is ample study space available on campus; the Library, the Learning Zone are all available for you to use. There is a PC lab in Bowland North (A64), which has 26 computers and a printer.  You can access the PC Lab 24/7 using your University identity card. There are also quiet study spaces located in various locations around campus.

Locker Hire

Students who do not live on campus can hire a locker for the duration of the academic year, useful for storing belongings that you don’t want to carry with you all day. Lockers can be hired for £15 for the academic year; a refund of £10 will be processed providing the key is returned at the end of the hire period.  Lockers are limited and are hired on a first come first served basis. .

Commuter Students

We appreciate the challenges facing commuter students may differ from those facing students that choose to live on campus, and we offer facilities to help our commuter students be more comfortable whilst on campus and to make the transition to University life a little easier.

  • Dedicated study space

The Calder Room (A62) in Bowland Main is a dedicated quiet study space available to Bowland commuter students. There are study tables, comfy sofas and two computers linked to the University network. The room is open from 7.30am to 10pm during term time. Within the Calder Room we have a limited number of lockers which are available to hire for the duration of the academic year. Hire cost is £15 and a refund of £10 will be processed at the end of the year providing the key is returned. Completed application forms can be taken to Lorna Harrison in A59 Bowland Main, from the start of Welcome Week, along with payment.

Next door to the Calder Room there is a small kitchen used by commuter students and college staff. The kitchen is equipped with two microwaves, a kettle, toaster, a hot and cold water tap, two fridges and a freezer.

  • Parking arrangements

Commuter students living outside of the defined urban core area can apply for a campus parking permit. For the full guidance, please see Car Parking 2018/19

  • Travel bursaries

Bowland College provides two travel bursaries of £500 each for incoming first year mature students with a home postcode within the Lancashire and Cumbria regions, so if you are, or will be, a first year mature student with dependants and have costs associated with child-care, or a disabled student or have special needs, you may be eligible for this award. For more information on when and how to apply, please refer to our information on Scholarships.
