Renewable energy sources challenge us to think differently\u00a0about the expectation that energy is always available\u00a0whenever we demand it. \u2018On Supply\u2019 will work with the\u00a0citizens of Tiree, a small island off the west coast of Scotland,\u00a0to explore how new energy \u00a0awareness devices might help\u00a0communities reflect on when energy is available and promote\u00a0use at \u2018greener\u2019 times.<\/p>\n
Due to a favourable wind environment, the citizens of Tiree\u00a0generate a significant proportion of their energy using \u2018Tilley\u2019, a\u00a0900kW turbine. This project will work with local communities\u00a0to co-design interactive technologies aimed at reinforcing\u00a0the connection between citizens and the energy from their\u00a0turbine.<\/p>\n
The project brings together University academics from\u00a0Lancaster, Birmingham and \u00a0Goldsmiths, Digital Westie and\u00a0Cleanweb, to work with the Tiree Trust, and citizens of Tiree.<\/p>\n
The project is currently developing ideas to explicitly\u00a0prototype and trial new technology designs to stimulate\u00a0citizens into thinking innovatively about how to adapt their\u00a0lifestyles in response to green energy availability. These ideas\u00a0will be showcased at the Community Relay Event.<\/p>\n
On Supply will contribute to the debate in sustainability\u00a0generally and specifically in sustainable human computer\u00a0interaction, generating an understanding of what would make\u00a0people change behaviour regarding the energy they use.\u00a0The project hopes to produce publications and outreach,\u00a0a legacy proof of concept infrastructure for monitoring\u00a0home use, grid load and Tilley (the turbine) generation.
