What is the project challenge?<\/h3>\n

With the government\u2019s push towards localism \u2013 such as the\u00a0right to build, communities need to understand publicly\u00a0available data before they can make informed decisions. For
\nexample Councils now publish data on all expenditure over\u00a0\u00a3500, but this is often difficult to analyse and understand.\u00a0Community Data Explorer will demystify this available\u00a0open data, working with a rural community, to find ways\u00a0of visualising information, to help shape how their public\u00a0services are delivered.<\/p>\n

Who are involved?<\/h3>\n

Cybermoor – a community-based co-operative, Swirrl – a Manchester-based open data specialist company, and academics and PhD students from Lancaster University.<\/p>\n

What new digital technology is developing?<\/h3>\n

Community Data Explorer will create an app to enable the\u00a0community of Alston moor and other rural communities\u00a0to analyse data and take control of their local services and\u00a0assets.
\nThe project will explore possibilities for delivering services\u00a0differently and enable citizens to develop new skills to\u00a0improve the workforce. Through the project local residents\u00a0will identify priority data sets in the community, obtain access\u00a0to the data, clean the data and develop an API (application\u00a0programming interface). These apps will form the heart of a
\n\u201cCommunity Data Explorer\u201d app for local authorities.<\/p>\n

What are the intended impacts?<\/h3>\n

Visualising public data in compelling ways can make\u00a0community members more aware of the possibility\u00a0of delivering new services. By developing a greater\u00a0understanding of data and analysis, citizens can develop new\u00a0skills, understanding what data is available, and what they can\u00a0expect to achieve.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
