Wescley’s second Cemore Research Colloquium will be held 2.30-4pm, 29th January 2019 in the Mobslab (B37, Bowland North, Lancaster University). Our presenter will be visiting researcher, Wescley Xavier, Professor at Federal University of Viçosa. He will discuss work in progress on the theme ‘”Spatial and identity determination in cities involved in the tourism market”’. Please see below for the abstract:
In the last decades, public policies aimed at the development of tourism have been observed all over the world. Municipal governments incorporate in their agendas planning that includes not only the creation of the necessary touristic infrastructure but also strategies to promote cities as products to be offered in the tourism market. The commercialization of cities involves the creation of a relatively homogeneous sense of “city” that can be recognized in the tourism market. It has a direct effect on spatial occupation, in an organic or planned way and the creation of scenery that can compose the city as a product. Given this context, my proposal is to discuss this process of commodification of cities for the following aspects: spatial and identity determination; production of meanings; dialectical movements of culture.
