{"id":2009,"date":"2017-07-17T16:40:01","date_gmt":"2017-07-17T15:40:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/cemore\/?p=2009"},"modified":"2022-07-20T10:45:16","modified_gmt":"2022-07-20T09:45:16","slug":"data-publics-conference-final-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/cemore\/data-publics-conference-final-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Data Publics conference: final report"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The Data Publics conference ran over three days, from 31st March to 2nd April 2017 at LICA, Lancaster University.<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It was supported by Cemore, alongside funding and support from a range of other partners, including the Digital Economy Network and the Data Science Institute (Lancaster University).<br \/>\nThe aim of the conference was to investigate the diverse ways in which publics are, and can be, constituted, provoked, threatened, understood, and represented. This included examining the role played in the formation of publics by new on- and offline infrastructures, data visualisations, social and economic practices, research methods and creative practices, and emerging and future technologies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2014 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/cemore\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/P4010117-hires-1-480x245.jpg\" alt=\"Participants at Data Publics conference\" width=\"480\" height=\"245\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/cemore\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/P4010117-hires-1-480x245.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/cemore\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/P4010117-hires-1-768x392.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/cemore\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/P4010117-hires-1.jpg 1000w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 480px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 480\/245;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It facilitated cross-cutting conversations between designers, social scientists and creative technologists to explore the new challenges and opportunities afforded by thinking and working with \u201cData Publics\u201d, including keynote talks by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/sacs\/staff\/profile\/johnbowers.html#background\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Bowers<\/a> (Newcastle University), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheffield.ac.uk\/socstudies\/staff\/staff-profiles\/helen-kennedy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Helen Kennedy<\/a> (The University of Sheffield), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uu.nl\/staff\/MLdeLange\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michiel de Lange<\/a> (Utrecht University), <a href=\"http:\/\/personprofil.aau.dk\/129860?lang=en#\/minside\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anders Koed Madsen<\/a> (Aalborg University), <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.warwick.ac.uk\/fac\/cross_fac\/cim\/people\/noortje-marres\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Noortje Marres<\/a> (University of Warwick), and <a href=\"http:\/\/ast.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Taylor<\/a> (Microsoft Research).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The organisers have just written up a final report on the event that we are happy to make available here.
