{"id":2056,"date":"2017-08-07T11:57:43","date_gmt":"2017-08-07T10:57:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/cemore\/?p=2056"},"modified":"2022-08-01T11:43:34","modified_gmt":"2022-08-01T10:43:34","slug":"playing-with-play-at-cemore-away-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/cemore\/playing-with-play-at-cemore-away-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Playing with Play at CeMoRe Away Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>In this year\u2019s Away Day, Cemore &amp; Co played with play.<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Lucky enough to catch one of Lancaster\u2019s strange but glorious hot days, Cemore and <a href=\"http:\/\/imagination.lancs.ac.uk\/\">Imagination<\/a> friends took the day out in Halton, by the Lune River. The ride was terrific and it took us in a monstrous journey of play, research \u2013with a twist- and collaborations \u2013with the bests!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In Cemore we have been using and developing mobile methods and methodologies. These involve \u2018moving into\u2019 others\u2019 contexts, moving along with others and allowing oneself to be moved by the encounters. Sometimes this\u00a0inspires in(ter)vention(s). Cemore, with the best of the companies, had a \u2018play date\u2019 into this mix of sociology and design research through methods like design fictions, board and body games, and playful experiments.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We counted with the ludic contributions of:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/people-profiles\/marion-walker\">Marion Walker<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/sociology\/about-us\/people\/alan-smith\">Alan Smith<\/a>, who set us jumping with their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/cuidar\/en\/\">CUIDAR<\/a> \u00a0\u201cFlood Snakes and Ladders\u201d a game of chance, music, and empathy that uses material collected from their work with flood affected children.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Prof. <a href=\"http:\/\/imagination.lancs.ac.uk\/people\/Paul_Coulton\">Paul Coulton<\/a>\u2019s made his magic and took a bunny from his top hat, with a playful interface project \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/imagination.lancs.ac.uk\/activities\/Stories_2_Connect\">Stories to connect<\/a>\u2019, a physical-digital experiment that enables children and young people at the margins of society to tell their own stories.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/cemore\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Stories-to-connect.jpg\" alt=\"stories-to-connect\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2064 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/cemore\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Stories-to-connect.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/cemore\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Stories-to-connect-480x270.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/cemore\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Stories-to-connect-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/cemore\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Stories-to-connect-1080x608.jpg 1080w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1280px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1281\/720;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>During the day we discussed how play can be use at different stages of research; to think playfully, to engage communities, as an ethnographic tool, to disseminate findings, to make outcomes more engaging, to connect with people, stories and places that otherwise we would not have access and ultimately to catalyse knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We were very serious about playing. We mapped out potentialities of research collaborations. With the facilitation of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.research.lancs.ac.uk\/portal\/en\/people\/constanze-vageler(949cc590-0088-46a3-a347-00effdce5179).html\">Constanze Vageler<\/a>, Senior Research Development Manager of Lancaster University, we dissected current calls for research and devised projects that respond to them around people\u2019s interests incorporating play.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As a way to match interests, play, and research proposal we played \u201cresearch monster roulette\u201d and each of us build our own \u2018mega monster project\u2019, with a research interest in our head, a funding body, and playfulness for legs.
