Monika is just about to travel to\u00a0S\u00e3o Paulo with the first set of books and to work with colleagues and students\u00a0during\u00a0the SPMobilities2017\u00a0Summer School. As part of the summer school we will try to find ways of getting John’s books\u00a0– which are\u00a0currently held\u00a0at Lancaster’s University Library – over to\u00a0S\u00e3o Paulo – a complex cargo mobility story!<\/p>\n

The idea\u00a0of locating the books at the\u00a0Foundation of the School of Sociology and Politics <\/em>at\u00a0the University of S\u00e3o Paulo<\/em>\u00a0(USP) is to deepen existing research relationships between Cemore\u00a0and the Social Sciences School\u00a0<\/em>at USP and open up opportunities for\u00a0collaboration with\u00a0scholars in South America and globally. There will be opportunities to visit USP and there will also be an online portal.<\/p>\n Cemore has close links with USP, Brazil\u2019s most prestigious university. USP was\u00a0founded in 1933, in response to political and economic turmoil, with the Free School of Sociology and Politics<\/em> (ELSP) (the current Foundation of the Social Sciences School<\/em>). These sociological origins have attracted scholars from around the world, including Claude L\u00e9vi-Strauss and Fernand Braudel as Visiting Professors. John Urry visited several times (last 2011), Monika Buscher has travelled virtually (2011) and several scholars connected to USP have spent time at Lancaster, including Saulo Cwerner (PhD 2006-2009), Bianca Freire-Medeiros (1 year postdoc 2009), Ariane Fernandes da Concei\u00e7\u00e3o (6 month Visiting PhD 2015), Camila Dos Santos Moraes (6 month Visiting PhD 2016), Thiago Allis (Visiting Speaker 2016). These relationships have resulted in joint research outputs, including\u00a0the book Aeromobilities<\/em><\/a> (Routledge 2009, Cwerner, Kesselring, Urry).<\/p>\n Mobilities Research in Brazil is a burgeoning field, currently inspired predominantly by John Urry\u2019s The Tourist Gaze<\/em>, but discovering the rich seams of insight in his later books, including After the Car<\/a>, Mobilities<\/a><\/em>, Offshoring <\/em><\/a>and What is the Future?<\/a>, <\/em>and work on Mobile Methods<\/em><\/a> (Monika B\u00fcscher), Mobility and the Humanities<\/a>\u00a0(Lynne Pearce),\u00a0International business travel<\/a>\u00a0(James Faulconbridge), Migration studies<\/a>\u00a0(Anne-Marie Fortier),\u00a0art and\u00a0Creative practice as mobile method<\/a>\u00a0(Jen Southern).\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n S\u00e3o Paulo is pioneering\u00a0mobilities innovations. In one of his more recent analyses, Living in the City <\/em><\/a>(2014), John Urry characterises S\u00e3o Paulo as \u2018at the vanguard\u2019 of deep mobility and social transformations. He foresees urban futures that involve \u2018fortressed\u2019 walled cities and an extensive \u2018security-isation\u2019 of populations, similar in some ways to cities in the medieval period which provided protection against raiders, invaders and diseases, where \u2018the rich would mainly travel in the air in armed helicopters or light aircraft, a pattern prefigured in Sao Paulo\u2019.<\/p>\n By placing John Urry\u2019s books as a complete library in the University of S\u00e3o Paulo, under the supervision of Bianca Freire-Medeiros, Professor of Sociology, a unique resource for thousands of students and scholars in Brazil would be created. USP is involved in teaching, research and public sociology that seeks to shape futures. Bianca is a world-leading scholar on tourism and development. Material for her book Touring Poverty<\/em><\/a> (2013) was developed during her stay at Lancaster.
