We recently held the MSc Data Science End-of-Programme Poster Conference, which was the first in-person conference for 3 years. The event was attended by around 100 guests including students, University staff and representatives of our partner organisations. There were around 70 posters on display throughout 3 exhibition spaces in Infolab. Visitors were struck by both the diversity of the students’ projects and the quality of the work on display. This year 60 MSc Data Science students performed external placements, working with organisations that included specialist data science consultancies, such as Mirador, Bonamy Finch, Peak Insight and Informed Solutions, large corporations such as Avanti West Coast and N Brown Ltd., and public bodies such as the NHS, Lancashire County Council and the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology. Visitors were able to see how data science can be used for such diverse purposes as assessing the likely impact of defibrillator drones on rural healthcare, how data usage can assist the drive to NetZero carbon, and how care can be improved for vulnerable patients through the use of smart socks. Our external guests were very complimentary about the value delivered by the projects that they had hosted and expressed enthusiasm for further collaboration with DSI. The continuous development of our relationships with external organisations plays a valuable role in providing employment opportunities for our students and research partners for our academics. Colleagues who are interested in our engagement work or would like to speak about opportunities for collaboration are welcome to talk to Simon Tomlinson.
