To celebrate our students’ achievements during their placement projects, we hold a showcase event at the end of each academic year. Our students travel across the country for their placements. Therefore the showcase gives us the chance to come back together as a group before the students embark on their professional careers.
Around 100 people, including students, staff and representatives of organisations who had hosted placement projects have attended our recent events. The directors of the Data Science Institute host the showcases to allow for a lively discussion of the students’ experiences and the contributions that they have made to their host organisations.
These events underline the emphasis that our programme places on the development of both technical proficiencies and the soft skills that are needed to become a successful data scientist. These skills include the ability to articulate the meaning of data in an engaging manner. The attendance of our partner organisations further allows the students to gain experience in talking to both technical and non-technical audiences and to practice effective communication.
Recent poster prizes have been sponsored by Co-operative Insurance Services and by the Data Science Institute. Jane Baxter and Eleanor Hudson won awards for work performed at NBrown Ltd. and within the NHS.
We’re delighted with the showcase events as being a final step towards launching the data science careers of our students and giving our external partners an understanding of the breadth of the students’ skills.
