Now enriched with a cluster of popular retail outlets, Edward Roberts Court is set to undergo a major remodelling project this summer to improve accessibility, re-shape the pedestrian route and create an attractive social space that features new landscaping and seating areas.

Named after American activist Edward Roberts, a pioneering leader of the disability rights movement, the food court was originally constructed in the mid 1990’s to provide a wheelchair accessible route between North and South Campus.

The redevelopment of this space will see the existing oval ramp remodelled to create a new route with improved accessibility. The steps adjacent to the Spar will be removed and the entire space will be revived to fit with surrounding areas such as the Spine and Alexandra Square, both of which have recently undergone refurbishment projects similar to this. The overall aim of the project is to bring Edward Roberts Court up to standard with the rest of campus, encouraging social wellbeing for everybody on campus.

Jo Hardman, Head of Commercial Services at Lancaster University said; “Ultimately we want to create a space that focuses on wellbeing, somewhere people can relax and socialise with friends. The project will bring Edward Roberts Court up to standard, reviving the whole area and making it a better fit with the rest of campus.”

Wilson Mason Architects were appointed by Lancaster University in early 2018 to deliver plans for the new space and have since been working with the University to co-ordinate a series of consultation events and workshops. Ideas and feedback were really positive and Lancaster based Askam Civil Engineering Ltd have now been appointed as main contractor for the project.

Construction is scheduled to start on Sunday 30th June 2019. More information about the project is available online.
