Join Professor Rob Short and members of the Materials Science Institute and GISMO teams to discuss functional coatings.

Find out about advances in materials science from researchers working in these fields and take the opportunity to discuss how you and your business could benefit.

The rise of healthcare associated infections (HCAIs), anti-microbial resistance (AMR) and the current COVID-19 pandemic have highlighted the need for anti-microbial and anti-viral coatings to inhibit the growth of microorganisms and to reduce potential surface contact propagation.

Coatings are substances applied to a material or a product to enhance its overall properties, such as water wettability, solvent resistance, gas or solvent permeability adhesion, and/or resistance to wear without affecting bulk properties. They can be decorative, protective and – in the case of smart materials – add functionality to the product, i.e. switch properties under external control.

Functional coatings represent a multi-billion-pound industry within the UK and are applied to products as diverse as contact lenses and drinks cartons; they are found in automotive products, textiles, polymer/plastic films, construction materials, and products and processes affected by biofilms, e.g. pipes and medical implants.

Meet our materials science experts and find out about how to engage with Lancaster University’s Materials Science Institute and the GISMO programme to drive innovation and improve business prospects, improve the reliability and performance of your products and processes, and find out more about our specialist facilities at Lancaster University.

The next seminar in the series is on Friday, 27 November when the topic will be surfaces and surface analysis.

Speakers

Professor Rob Short, Director of the Lancaster University Materials Science Institute.
