A Lancaster University Engineering professor has spoken at an important virtual meeting of the Industry and Parliament Trust on the future of manufacturing in the UK.

Professor Claudio Paoloni, Head of Lancaster University’s Engineering Department, provided expert knowledge at the event, which was chaired by Judith Cummins MP of the Select Committee on Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

Professor Paoloni told an audience consisting of members of both Houses of Parliament, as well as figures from a wide range of sectors from UK industry, that the ongoing crisis could be an opportunity for radical change and the adoption of new technologies such as artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things.

He also explained how the strength of UK manufacturing still lies with its skilled workforce and he stressed the importance of investing in new engineers and upskilling the existing workforce.

Professor Paoloni has written a blog for the Industry and Parliament Trust, which is an independent charity, which outlines his views on how manufacturing in the UK can become resilient, innovative and successful in an uncertain future.
