Abstract: Historically, project management academics and practitioners have mostly focused on the planning and delivery of infrastructure. However, several infrastructures are reaching their end-of-life calling for decommissioning projects.

Because of their peculiar nature, decommissioning projects need to be planned and delivered in a completely different way for construction projects. Moreover, decommissioning projects are long, complex, and expensive and there is still limited understanding of what affects their performance. This speech raises awareness about decommissioning in the project management community, explaining the key challenges in the planning and delivery of these projects and the key role played by project management. Bio: Giorgio Locatelli is associate professor of infrastructure procurement and management at the University of Leeds. His research area is economics and management in large and complex infrastructure. Giorgio also works as a consultant and visiting academic for several institutions, including the IAEA and the UK government. He attracted about 1 million euro in research founds. He is the co-author of more than 100 international peer-reviewed publications with about 1500 citations. Giorgio sits in the editorial board of several journals including the three most prestigious project management journals: “Project Management Journal” (where is senior editor), the “International Journal of Project Management”, and “Construction Management and Economics”.
