A number of countries intend to or already have legalised the consumption of recreational cannabis.

Canada is planning to legalise recreational cannabis in the summer of 2018 and around ten American states have legalised recreational cannabis. The Netherlands have legalised the consumption and retail of recreational cannabis since the 1970’s.

In this lecture, Lancaster University's Dr Gary Potter and Dr Thaddeus Müller will investigate why and how some American states have recently legalised recreational cannabis, and consider why this path has not been followed in the UK so far. The lecture will be followed by the opportunity to ask questions, so come along to hear more about both sides of this controversial topic.

Doors will open at 6pm, and the 45 minute lecture will begin at 6.30pm and be followed by the opportunity to ask questions. Refreshments will be provided.

Dr Thaddeus Müller and Dr Gary Potter are senior lecturers in Criminology at Lancaster University.

Thaddeus’s research focuses on the production and regulation of cannabis, especially how different US states and countries are legalising recreational cannabis. His comparative international cannabis research involves countries such as the Netherlands, the UK, the United States and Canada.

Gary has spent over 15 years researching cannabis cultivation in the UK and around the world. His first book, Weed, Need and Greed, explored the range of people involved in growing cannabis in Britain, and his second book, World Wide Weed, looked at cannabis production in a global context.
