PhD student James Collingwood will present a seminar to the Management Science Department. This is the second in a two seminar session.
Abstract:Statistics currently collected during a professional snooker match consider the Pot Success and Safety Success rates for each player. Although only collected for a limited number of matches they provide an indication of the relative strengths and weaknesses of each player. By breaking down frames into the scoring visits made by each player we demonstrate how this provides a clearer indication of how frames and matches are won and lost.
We have also looked at different methods of rating each player based on past performances and evaluate these by assessing their ability to predict the results of future matches. A simple model based on the win percentages of each player per forms as well as more sophisticated models developed by Bradley-Terry and Elo, highlighting the need to understand in more detail the effects of current form and the profile of the match being played.
