My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun; Coral is far more red than her lips’ red;... I love to hear her speak, yet well I know That music hath a far more pleasing sound;
In this event, Gavin Bryars, one of today’s most inventive artistic figures, wove together eight sonnets by Shakespeare on the subjects of time, memory and music. Music, song, speech and film cast the words in new light in Nothing Like the Sun, alongside which Bryars had invited sonnet settings from Antony Hegarty (Antony and the Johnsons), Mira Calix, former 10,000 Maniacs front woman Natalie Merchant, Alexander Balanescu and former Virgin Prunes frontman Gavin Friday. Vocalists Anna Maria Friman, John Potter and Friday joined the eight instrumentalists from Opera North for this special performance.
