The New Sports Hall
Construction is underway to create an additional £6 million Sports Hall, doubling the amount of available court space in time to host the infamous Roses tournament in Spring 2020.
More courts meaning better availability
Plans for the new building double the amount of court space currently available with the aim of easing demand and making sports available to more people. Eight new badminton courts will be marked out in the new hall, as well as a full size basketball court, 3 netball courts and 2 futsall courts.
Serious about competition
Every two years Lancaster University hosts Roses - the historic intervarsity competition against rivals York. The new Sports Hall will feature a 500 seat retractable 'grand stand' to create an atmosphere that's fit for championship level sporting events.
830 new trees will be planted as part of the University's Woodland Management Plan, to offset the environmental impact of the new building. Other design features such as roof installation and ventilation systems have been incorporated to ensure the building is as environmentally friendly as possible. The project aims to achieve a BREEAM rating of 'outstanding', the highest award available for sustainable building design.
