Vision Impaired Directions

North Spine

The North Spine is under construction at Great Hall Courtyard and along the length of the Spine from Alexandra Square to Bowland North Quad. As such, be aware that the width of the North Spine is reduced by half.

Great Hall Square to Great Hall Court and North Spine

  • The area between Great Hall Square and Great Hall Courtyard is under construction
  • For Great Hall Courtyard use the access through the Great Hall Building (this is not a wheelchair accessible route)
  • Upon leaving the Great Hall Building turn left only, and head for the marketplace café
  •  There is no through route from the Great Hall Building in front of County Bar

Market place to FASS via County Quad

  • The area between Great Hall Square and Great Hall Courtyard is closed up to County Bar
  • From Marketplace Courtyard take the route through County Quad diagonally to the opposite cut-through
  • Upon leaving County Quad turn left for the rest of the North Spine (there is no right turn here)

Alexandra Square to North Spine

Notes:   From 5th November, the Spine construction works have moved to the opposite side of the pathway to the area directly outside Santander for a period of 3 weeks.

  • When approaching the North Spine from Alexandra Square, please keep left until you arrive at the cut-through next to the Learning Zone.
  • At this point the pathway moves back over to the right adjacent to the Faraday Building.
  • When approaching the Alexandra Square from the North Spine, please keep right.
  • Just before you reach Santander at the mouth of the North Spine, follow the pathway to the right and enter Alexandra Square.

North Spine to Bowland Quad

Notes:   The width of the Spine at this point is reduced by half – Heading North please keep right. Heading South please keep left.

The cut-through next to the Learning Zone is closed however the cut-through next to Blackwell’s Bookshop is now open.

 

  • Coming southwards down the North Spine to Bowland Main proceed right after Blackwell’s Bookshop
  • Coming Northwards please turn Left just before Blackwell’s Bookshop

Bowland Quad to Alexandra Square

Notes:   From Saturday 4th November, a section of building works located at the mouth of the North Spine will move to the opposite side of the pathway outside Santander. The works are scheduled to last 3 weeks.

The cut-through next to the Learning Zone is closed however the cut-through next to Blackwell’s Bookshop is now open.

 

  • Access from Bowland Main to the North Spine is through the learning Zone and in to Alexandra Square or alternatively through the cut-through next to Blackwell’s Bookshop
  • Once in Alexandra Square turn Left and proceed to the North Spine by Santander

 

Weekend Closure of North Spine at Santander

From Saturday 11th November weekend works have been scheduled which will allow contractors to complete the temporary surface works and to prepare for the installation of steel supports along the North Spine between Santander and the Learning Zone.

The steel work erection will be conducted over the next few weekends to minimise disruption on campus. Each Monday the area will be re-opened and all routes and signage re-instated so the mouth of the North Spine will be open as usual.

  • Approaching from the North, leave the North Spine using the cut-through to the left leading to Bowland Quad - next to Blackwell’s Bookshop.
  • Once in Bowland Quad, turn left and proceed towards the Learning Zone in the opposite corner.
  • Upon reaching the end of the pathway in Bowland Quad, turn left and proceed in to the cut-through until reaching the entrance to the Learning Zone to the right.
  • Proceed though the entrance to the Learning zone and take the exit to Alexandra Square on the left, opposite the helpdesk. (caution, the automatic door is slow and made of glass)
  • Once in Alexandra Square, the accessibility ramp is half-right.

 

South Spine

The South Spine is under construction between Alexandra Square and the bottom of the ramp opposite the Deli. The Deli and LUSU Living remain open from Edward Roberts Courtyard.

Alexandra Square to South Spine

  • From the entrance to the South Spine turn left towards Costa Coffee
  • Take the cut-through next to Costa Coffee in to Edward Roberts Courtyard
  • Once in Edward Roberts Courtyard turn right and proceed down the ramp

Note: Half way down the ramp you may turn right to access the Deli or LUSU Living

  • Continue down the ramp and exit Edward Roberts Courtyard southwards
  • Follow the road briefly until you approach Furness College to the right
  • Continue through Furness College Courtyard and on through the double doors of the building
  • Proceed through the building until you reach the South Spine on the other side, then turn left

Note: the lift in Furness College is currently out of use and as such, people finding it difficult to use stairs are not advised to use this route. Instead follow the Fylde Quad to Engineering route; continuing on the road, beyond Furness College and on towards Fylde College to the right.

Alexandra Square to South Campus

  • From the entrance to the South Spine turn left towards Costa Coffee
  • Take the cut-through next to Costa Coffee in to Edward Roberts Courtyard
  • Once in Edward Roberts Courtyard turn right and proceed down the ramp
  • Continue down the ramp and exit Edward Roberts Courtyard to the right
  • Proceed southwards down the road beyond Fylde college on the right until you reach the courtyard behind Science and Technology
  • Continue half right down the path and enter the Science and Technology Building
  • Upon entering the Science and Technology Building turn half left and proceed through the exit on the opposite side.
  • Once out of the building turn left for LUMS and the rest of south campus or right to access the Engineering Building.

Fylde Quad to Engineering Square

Note: The ramp between Engineering Square and Fylde Quad is under construction and is only open for use between 5pm and 7am each day.

Anyone unable to use the steps opposite the ramp should use the accessible route through Science and technology mentioned above.
