{"id":7221,"date":"2019-05-22T15:54:31","date_gmt":"2019-05-22T15:54:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/fas\/psych\/glossary\/addison-s_disease\/"},"modified":"2019-07-24T14:35:03","modified_gmt":"2019-07-24T14:35:03","slug":"addison-s_disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/fas\/psych\/glossary\/addison-s_disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Addison&#8217;s disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Addison\u2019s disease, also known as primary adrenal insufficiency, is relatively uncommon disorder affecting about 8,400 people in the UK.\u00a0\u00a0It occurs when the two adrenal glands situated atop of the kidneys are damaged giving rise to a deficiency in two essential steroid hormones (cortisol and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/compound\/Aldosterone\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-editable-link=\"https:\/\/pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/compound\/Aldosterone?target=_self\">aldosterone<\/a>) due in most cases to an autoimmune response.\u00a0\u00a0Tending to present first during childhood, it can be indicated by, for example, muscle weakness and increased thirst.\u00a0\u00a0Treatment by means of corticosteroids can give rise to asthma. \u00a0It is an X-linked trait and thus inherited from mother to child. \u00a0Perhaps the most famous sufferer of the disease was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.addisons.org.uk\/articles.html\/famous-lives\/john-f-kennedy-r132\/\">John F.
