{"id":7912,"date":"2019-05-22T16:02:00","date_gmt":"2019-05-22T16:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/fas\/psych\/glossary\/experimental_method\/"},"modified":"2019-05-22T16:02:00","modified_gmt":"2019-05-22T16:02:00","slug":"experimental_method","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/fas\/psych\/glossary\/experimental_method\/","title":{"rendered":"Experimental method"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The control and manipulation of variables in order to test scientific theories. &nbsp;In laboratory-based experiments, it typically involves the manipulation of one variable while attempting to keep all others constant. &nbsp;Outside the laboratory, there are two other types of experiments, with less control over potential confounding variables. &nbsp;One is field experiments carried out in something approaching a natural setting. &nbsp;An example is the study by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.muskingum.edu\/~psych\/psycweb\/history\/tinbergen.htm\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/www.muskingum.edu\/~psych\/psycweb\/history\/tinbergen.htm&amp;target=_self\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Niko Tinbergen<\/a> in 1950 on the selective pecking response of herring gull chicks to the red spot on cardboard model beaks (considered in the past to be a cardinal example of an innate releasing mechanism, but subsequently criticized for <a href=\"http:\/\/bio.cbi.pku.edu.cn\/userfiles\/File\/lifm\/Mac\/ten-Cate_2009_Animal-Behaviour_785-794.pdf\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/bio.cbi.pku.edu.cn\/userfiles\/File\/lifm\/Mac\/ten-Cate_2009_Animal-Behaviour_785-794.pdf&amp;target=_self\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">methodological shortcomings<\/a>). &nbsp;Natural experiments constitute the other type and can arise from changes in everyday situations (e.g., changing a school curriculum) and focal cortical lesions (e.g., the well-known case of visual agnosia manifested by <a href=\"http:\/\/brainandsky.blogspot.co.uk\/2008\/07\/case-of-df-visual-form-agnosia_03.html\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/brainandsky.blogspot.co.uk\/2008\/07\/case-of-df-visual-form-agnosia_03.html&amp;target=_self\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patient DF<\/a>), the latter constituting something akin to an &#8216;experiment in nature&#8217;. &nbsp;The historical foundations of the experimental method is the subject of some debate. &nbsp;In a western context, claims have been made on behalf of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grosseteste.com\/bio.htm\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/www.grosseteste.com\/bio.htm&amp;target=_self\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert Grosseteste<\/a> (c.1170-1253) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nndb.com\/people\/582\/000114240\/\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/www.nndb.com\/people\/582\/000114240\/&amp;target=_self\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roger Bacon<\/a> (1214-1294). &nbsp;
