The effect was first reported by <a href=\"http:\/\/psychcentral.com\/classics\/Koffka\/Perception\/glossary.htm\" target=\"_self\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/psychcentral.com\/classics\/Koffka\/Perception\/glossary.htm&amp;target=_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Friedrich Schumann<\/a> (1863-1940) who influenced the the foundation of <a href=\"http:\/\/psychclassics.yorku.ca\/Kohler\/today.htm\" target=\"_self\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/psychclassics.yorku.ca\/Kohler\/today.htm&amp;target=_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gestalt psychology<\/a>. &nbsp;Evidence suggests that that the perception of illusory contours emerges about 3-4 months of age, but that this ability does not manifest adult-ilke outcomes until around 7-8 months. &nbsp;An example of well-known figure with illusory contours is shown in the figure below.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: center; \">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"..\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/image065-illusory-contours.jpg\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: center; \">The Kanizsa triangle in which illusory contours appear to form a triangle although there are no corresponding changes in luminance.
